Risers are made of .75 inch thick solid wood and available from 36 inches to 96 inches in length. The standard riser height is 7.5 inches.

The length of riser you need is determined by the width of your staircase. When installing new treads or Retreads the riser is typically installed so that it is sitting on top of the tread below. Installing the riser on top of the tread versus behind allows for the stair tread to expand and contract without showing a gap in the back of the stair tread.
